Launch Observability and Rollback Plan

A practical workflow to see user-visible failure quickly and know who can reverse the release. Keep observed behavior separate from a planned check; the checklist is a decision aid, not a guarantee of security, uptime, ranking or demand.

Five-step workflow

  • **1. List the user-visible outcomes at risk.** Record an owner, date and evidence link for this step.
  • **2. Attach one signal and threshold to each outcome.** Record an owner, date and evidence link for this step.
  • **3. Record deploy identity and configuration changes.** Record an owner, date and evidence link for this step.
  • **4. Write the reversible rollback sequence.** Record an owner, date and evidence link for this step.
  • **5. Rehearse the decision with the on-call owner.** Record an owner, date and evidence link for this step.

Do the steps in order the first time. If a safety, privacy, financial, health, legal, or authorization boundary appears, pause the workflow. More activity is not progress when the prerequisite is missing.

Worked example

A checkout release returns HTTP 200 but purchase completion falls to zero. A funnel alert catches the outcome failure, the owner restores the previous deployment, and the incident note preserves the bad configuration for follow-up.

The useful pattern is the visible chain from context to evidence to decision. Another person should be able to understand what was observed, what remained uncertain, and why the next action was proportionate.

Keep a completion record

For each step, record the current behavior, the change you made, the result in production, what remains unknown, and the next owner. Repeat the original task after a change. Do not count a configured script or a visible form as delivery evidence.

Be Incident-Ready Before the First Traffic Spike

A practical workflow to prepare a small-team response path for availability, security, payment, and data incidents. Keep observed behavior separate from a planned check; the checklist is a decision aid, not a guarantee of security, uptime, ranking or demand.

Five-step workflow

  • **1. Choose the four incident classes that matter.** Record an owner, date and evidence link for this step.
  • **2. Name the first responder and decision owner.** Record an owner, date and evidence link for this step.
  • **3. Write containment and customer-update templates.** Record an owner, date and evidence link for this step.
  • **4. Verify access to logs, providers, and rollback.** Record an owner, date and evidence link for this step.
  • **5. Schedule a short retrospective and follow-up owner.** Record an owner, date and evidence link for this step.

Do the steps in order the first time. If a safety, privacy, financial, health, legal, or authorization boundary appears, pause the workflow. More activity is not progress when the prerequisite is missing.

Worked example

A launch-day provider outage blocks signups. The team posts a specific status update, preserves requests for retry, pauses paid traffic, restores service, and records the actual user impact before resuming outreach.

The useful pattern is the visible chain from context to evidence to decision. Another person should be able to understand what was observed, what remained uncertain, and why the next action was proportionate.

Keep a completion record
